How to Choose a Wedding Videographer for Your Day

Watch Full Films, Not Just the Highlights
It's tempting to fall for a three-minute showreel set to a swelling piano track, but every videographer on the planet has three minutes of beautiful footage from their very best weddings. The question isn't what they can do with the best light, the most photogenic couple and a dream venue. It's what they'll do with your day, in your venue, with your weather.
So before you shortlist anyone, ask to watch at least two complete wedding films from start to finish. Yes, it takes an evening. It's worth it. As you watch, pay attention to the things a showreel hides:
- How does the film handle the quiet, ordinary moments — the wait before the ceremony, the lull during the meal?
- Can you hear the vows and speeches clearly, or is the audio buried under music?
- Does the edit feel like a genuine record of the day, or a music video that happens to feature a wedding?
- Do the couple look relaxed and themselves, or self-conscious and posed?
If you enjoy a full film from a wet Tuesday in November, you'll almost certainly love your own.
Work Out Which Style Suits You
Videographers tend to fall into a few broad camps, and it helps to know which one you're drawn to before you start making calls.
- Documentary or reportage: unobtrusive, observational, minimal posing. They capture what happens rather than directing it. Ideal if you hate the idea of being filmed.
- Cinematic: carefully framed, often with a more stylised edit, colour grade and music. Beautiful, but usually involves more direction on the day.
- Classic or traditional: full-length coverage of the ceremony and speeches, minimal editing, heavy on the actual content. Great for families who want everything.
- Hybrid: a longer documentary edit plus a shorter cinematic highlights film. Increasingly common, and often the best of both worlds.
Ask yourself honestly: do you want a keepsake to watch on anniversaries, or a complete record to share with grandparents? The answer will narrow your shortlist fast.
Meet Your Shortlist Before You Book
You'll spend more time with your videographer on the wedding day than almost any other supplier — they'll be in the room while you're getting ready, hovering near the speeches, and standing behind you during the vows. If you don't click, that's going to feel awkward for everyone.
A short video call is usually enough. Treat it as a two-way interview and ask:
- How many weddings do you film a year, and do you work alone or with a second shooter?
- What's your backup plan if you're ill or your equipment fails?
- How much direction will you give us on the day?
- Can we see a full film from our venue, or somewhere similar?
Listen for how they talk about couples whose films you liked. Do they remember names? Do they describe the day affectionately? The best videographers are part filmmaker, part calm presence, and you'll feel that in conversation.
Pin Down Coverage, Timings and Deliverables
Vague promises cause most wedding video disappointments, so get the specifics in writing before you pay a deposit. Confirm how many hours of coverage are included, what time they'll arrive and leave, and whether travel is charged.
Think carefully about timings. In December, it can be dark by half three, which changes what's possible outdoors. Many churches and register offices have their own rules about cameras and where videographers may stand, so ask your venue early and pass the details on. If you're having a marquee wedding with no power nearby, that needs discussing too.
Also agree the deliverables: is it one highlights film, a full-length edit, or both? How long until you receive them? Are raw footage and separate audio tracks included?
Make Sure They'll Work Well With Your Photographer
Two suppliers competing for the same shot is the fastest way to feel crowded on your wedding day. A good videographer will ask who your photographer is, and ideally will have worked with them before — a surprising number of UK suppliers know each other well.
Ask directly how they avoid getting in each other's way. The strongest answer usually sounds something like: "We agree the key moments beforehand, I stay back and to the side during portraits, and I let them lead the posed shots."
If you can, put them in touch before the day, or arrange for them to arrive at similar times during the morning preparations. Ten minutes of coordination saves hours of shuffling around each other later.
Budget, Contracts and the Practical Bits
UK wedding videography typically ranges from around £800 for a single-shooter highlights film to £3,000 or more for full-day coverage with two filmmakers. Cheaper quotes aren't automatically a red flag, but ask what's missing: insurance, backup equipment, a second camera, a contract.
That contract matters. It should set out the date, the price, the deposit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms on both sides. Check they hold public liability insurance, which many venues now require.
Finally, ask about equipment failure and file backup. Professionals record to two cards simultaneously and back up footage the same night. Ask about it plainly — a good videographer will be pleased you asked.
Then watch those full films one more time, and trust your instinct. If you like the person and you like their work, you've found your filmmaker.
